How To Stay Healthy And Live Well As We Get Older

We as a general population are living for longer, which makes it more important than ever to stay healthy as we age. This doesn’t just mean eating the right diet, this means looking after both our mental and physical health.

There are several different ways to maintain physical and mental health as we get older.

The most basic ways to stay healthy are eating a well-balanced diet and staying as active as possible, whether it be running or swimming, but there are many other ways that can help us stay healthy:

Listen To Your Doctor

Your doctor knows best when they are prescribing medication and recommending activities to keep you at your healthiest. If they say to take a certain medication it is best to follow their instructions as this could prevent you becoming ill, or if they recommend swimming this could be to help your body stay strong and able to fight off illness.

Sleep Enough

When we sleep our body uses this time to regulate itself and heal, without enough sleep our mental and physical health can decline. If we don’t get enough sleep, we risk our body not being able to repair blood vessels and this can lead to high blood pressure and a weakened immune system, making it harder for us to fight off illness. Not getting enough sleep can lead to some brain functions performing slower, hindered memory, and even depression. By maintaining a healthy amount of sleep, you’ll feel like you have the energy you need to go about day-to-day activities and your body will be in a better state to keep itself healthy.

Keep Social

According to Age UK more than two million people in England over the age of 75 live alone. To prevent loneliness try to keep in contact with friends and family and even try to set up regular meetings to make sure you have regular social activity with other people. Joining gyms, local clubs and volunteering are also great ways of maintaining a good social life, as this will allow you to meet new people. If you have family and friends that don’t live near you, try and keep in contact in other ways. It’s amazing what a single conversation can do for your mental health.

There does come a point in our life when we may need some assistance with day-to-day activities and chores. However, this doesn’t have to be seen as a bad thing, as this can help keep you physically and mentally healthy.
