Working in care is one of the most rewarding careers that you can be a part of. So, why should you work in an establishment, such as a care or nursing home?

Develop long lasting relationships

Working in a care or nursing home means that you can get to spend time with the people that you are caring for, over a long period of time. This means that you are more likely to develop a long-lasting relationship. Unlike in short term care facilities, you can develop is special bond with those around you and ensure that being there for them during the ageing process creates a meaningful experience for them.

The older generation can teach us a lot

Older people who have lived full lives often have a lot to share. They may have learned what’s important to hold on to in life, and when you should just let go. They are likely to have a lot of good stories to tell, so make sure you’re listening!

Making celebrations meaningful

When working in a care home, you are effectively working in someone’s home, and it’s important to maintain that homely feel due to its comparative informality to acute short-term environments. As a carer, you can help special occasions feel meaningful to the residents when they otherwise may have not.

Improve your clinical care skills

It is often a misconception that working in a care home is unfulfilling, and this is why there is currently a crisis, as more people want to work in acute and hospital settings. This misconception couldn’t be further from the truth. Working in a care home environment requires you to frequently care for people with a complex set of needs. Many people do not want to go to hospital for their treatment and will stay in the care home. This dispels the myth that clinical skills are lost when working in this environment.

Your co-workers

Your co-workers have chosen the same career path as you. For them to be able to work in the environment that you do, often requires you to be an empathetic and caring person. They will enjoy getting to know their patients and being around like-minded people. You may find they become your extended family.

Of course, a role in a care home can be tough. If you want to go to work every day and make a difference to resident’s lives, there is nothing more rewarding than a career in establishment care!
