Avoiding Isolation in Old Age

Social isolation is a big issue and can have a serious effect on our health. Older people are particularly vulnerable to this as 2 million people over 75 in England live alone (Age UK). Additionally, more than one million people said that they go over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member. This can lead to depression and a serious decline in physical health and wellbeing.

There are ways in which we, whether it be family and friends or with help from us at Kare Plus Redbridge, can help to ensure that social potential is realised, therefore leading to a rise in general health.

Encourage Positive Body Image

Everyone, no matter their age, will benefit from a boost in self-esteem. Remember to encourage your elderly loved ones in order to make them feel good about themselves. This will lift their spirits and perhaps make them more likely to leave the house and socialise with confidence.

Address Incontinence

An elderly person who experiences incontinence may be less likely to leave their home because of fear, and this in turn can create social isolation. If family and healthcare professionals are there to appropriately address incontinence issues, this will give them more of an opportunity to be more socialable and live their lives without the embarrassment or fear.

Stay in touch with neighbours

Good neighbours can be a great help when it comes to combatting loneliness and feeling safe at home. Neighbours are helpful when trying to sort our unexpected problems or even just checking in. They can also help at helping the person be active within the community, this can be helpful if loved ones live far away.

Arrange transport for social activities

A big challenge for a lot of elderly people is transportation, they may want to go out but just can’t get there. Offering a lift or arranging transport such as a taxi may be really helpful in ensuring that they get where you want to go safely, and if they don’t have to make the arrangements, it may seem less scary and stressful to get out of the house.

Promote purpose

Some elderly people can feel like they don’t matter or that nobody cares. As a loved one or carer, you can try and promote this sense of purpose. Anything that involves being a part of a group is a great way to maintain a sense of purpose and prevent them from becoming isolated and lonely.

If you or your loved one is concerned about isolation in old age, Kare Plus Redbridge are here to help. Our carers are available to help, whether it be with dressing and helping you feel your best, helping with chores around the house or if you are in need of companionship.
