You may be thinking that you would love to have a role in care, but you’re not sure how to get there. Whether you want to work in the community or in a care/nursing home, there are a variety of skills you may already have that can help you on the way to being in the job you’ve dreamt of with Kare Plus Redbridge.

People Skills

You may have previous experience working with people, possibly in an advisory or management role. You might be a people person and therefore enjoy working with and helping patients and their families to feel comfortable and supported whilst they are in healthcare settings.

Most healthcare based jobs involve working with people, so enjoying being around people and having good people skills is vital for working in the healthcare profession.

Organisation

Organisation is a key skill to have in many aspects of life and in a variety of careers. You might already have administrative skills from a previous role, as well as a team leader or management experience.  Care work is often very time restricted, so organisation and time management skills are super important to ensure you are doing your job to the best of your ability.

If you are organised, people who are spending time with you and are under your care are likely to get more out of their experience if you are on time and organised. It can also make the job a lot less stressful!

Professionalism

Professionalism is often developed in working environments, and you can gain this skill in a large variety of roles. Carers should be able to provide unconditional care, indiscriminately and compassionately. This is where professionalism comes into play in a caregiving role. Professionalism is definitely a skill that can be nurtured within a role, and will likely improve with experience.

Commitment to learning

If you are interested in a healthcare career, it is important to have a commitment to learning as the skills that you need are often changing, as the industry moves on and is always improving. It is important to be on the ball with new requirements that are expected of you, and to be always trying to learn new things. Training may also be a requirement on an ongoing basis due to the fast pace of a career in healthcare.

Compassion

Compassion drives us to help and understand each other, and this is particularly important if you are interested in a job in healthcare. A good carer is compassionate and kind. Compassion is so important as without it, it is unlikely for you to be able to provide good care for your service users.
