Winter can be a tough time of the year for any of us, and for many people in our society it represents a period of uncertainty over how best to stay warm and how to keep costs down. With winters seemingly getting longer each year due to unpredictable seasons, this is likely to become a more prominent problem in the future.

While there are no fix all solutions for bringing the cost of heating your house down, there are a few small ways to help with heat retention. We’re going to list a few of them for you now!

1.Utilise your curtains & blinds

Curtains and blinds play an important role in the conservation of heat in the home. During the day they can be opened in order to utilise the warmth of the sun, at 5,726 degrees celsius on its surface, the sun can certainly help warm your home up. Closing blinds and curtains during the evenings will help keep your house warmer by making it much harder for that lovely warm air to escape.

2. Draft Excluders

There’s nothing worse than a cold draft when you’ve spent time and money heating up your house. This can often be caused by an old or ill-fitted door that lets cold air into the house. Fortunately, a simple draft excluder can often help keep the cold air out. Draft excluders form a seal over gaps, so you can stop the cold air from coming in while also stopping the warm air from escaping.

3. Keep unused rooms closed

If there are any rooms in your house that aren’t regularly used, make sure their doors are firmly shut. This will ensure the cold stays within them, and that the heat that you’ve created doesn’t go to waste warming up an empty room. It will also make the areas you want warmer as a result of better air flow.

4. Keep radiators clear

As delightful as it may sound, keeping a settee or chair near a radiator can reduce the temperature of the house as a whole. The heat the radiator gives off will warm whatever objects are near it rather than heating the entire house. Try to keep radiators clear of items so the heat projected by them can go to warming the house.

A lot of the heat expended by radiators also ends up in the walls, which is why it is also worth investing in radiator insulation. These insulating sheets reflect the heat back off the walls, ensuring a decrease in heat-loss, meaning your house will be warmer for longer.

There are plenty of places that sell radiation insulation, but click the link below to see Amazon’s listings.

5. Rugs and Floor Mats

Rugs can provide an excellent layer of floor insulation as they retain heat far better than solid flooring. Rugs also help stop heat from escaping through the floor, which can be a big problem for those people living in apartments or flats. As a nice bonus, they also happen to feel a lot nicer on your feet in the winter.

Conserving heat and ensuring utmost efficiency will always be the best ways to keep the house warm, but there are a number of schemes available to provide those most in need with free insulation and support this winter.
