We were delighted and very honoured to be invited to attend the Cavell Nurses Trust Awards last night (Thursday 22nd June, at the De Vere Grand Connaught rooms in London). Following a warm welcome from the bubbly Cavell Team, we were all wowed by some outstanding nibbles of joy; chips, mini pies, topped with mushy peas followed by a delicious medley of all our favourite mini desserts: Treats very fitting for the amazing bunch of people who were in attendance to have their hard work and dedication to their profession in care and nursing recognised.

A great opening address from Chief Executive John Orchard began the evening with some incredible Nurse, HCA and patient stories. The level of care being delivered by the nominees, runners up and winners was clearly beyond their line of duty in many cases. We certainly did not envy the difficult choice the judges must have had, deliberating over the nominees.

One particular highlight of the evening was hearing Mandy Stevens, a former Mental Health nurse speak out about her battle with depression and suicidal thoughts, something that many people may struggle to admit and seek out support and care. Mandy is so brave and inspirational to share her story which pertinently addresses the stigma of mental health, a condition that is on the rise in our often very pressured society. She is a beacon of hope for all who may have suffered with mental health, knowing that no matter how low you go, with the right care and support, there is a way out.

In summary, these people are true heroes and without them, our nation would be on its knees. It’s these people who are there for us after major disasters, of which there have been a few too many recently; terrorist attacks and major fires included, these people still walk back to work during harrowing times. In the words of Cavell Nurses Trust Chairman; Simon Knighton, ‘these people are so brave and we do not look after our nurses well enough’.

Organisations like Cavell Nurses Trust who support and care for nurses in their time of need are truly amazing too, their knock-on effect reaches right into the heart and soul of our nation.

From all of us at Kare Plus, huge congratulations to all those who won awards and also to those who did not. You are all befitting of recognition for the dedication to your profession and the challenging work that you do.

Thank you to Cavell Nurses Trust for inviting us to a fantastic and well organised event.
