Stay Cool: Top Five Ways to Beat the UK Summer Heat

Monday, July 29th, 2024 | Maria Wilkinson

The great British summer!

A time for barbecues, beach trips, and of course, the inevitable search for ways to stay cool when the mercury starts to rise.

With the UK finally getting some proper summer weather this month, it’s time to get creative with our cooling strategies.

Fear not, fellow Brits, for Kare Plus brings you our top five ways to keep cool this summer.

1. Embrace the Power of the Fan

First things first, let’s talk fans.

No, not the screaming kind at a One Direction or Little Mix reunion but the good old electric kind.

The humble fan has been a staple in British homes for decades and with good reason.

When the heat hits, there’s nothing quite like the soothing whirr of a fan to keep you from melting into a puddle on your living room floor.

But wait, there’s more!

Air conditioning is not exactly common in UK homes so for a next level cooling experience, try this DIY hack.

Place a bowl of ice in front of your fan and let the cool breeze waft over you.

It’s like your own mini Arctic breeze, minus the polar bears.

Plus, it’s a great way to repurpose those lonely ice trays languishing in your freezer most of us forget about.

2. Cool Down with Frozen Treats

Summer is the perfect excuse to indulge in all things icy.

From classic ice lollies to sophisticated sorbets, there’s a frozen treat for every taste bud.

Why not take a trip down memory lane with a Fab or a Zoom ice lolly? Or hit the spot with a Mr Whippy 99 cone?

If you’re feeling fancy, whip up some homemade fruit popsicles.

All you need is some fruit juice, a few slices of fresh fruit, and a set of popsicle molds.

For those who enjoy a more adult twist on their summer treats, frozen mocktails are the way to go.

Think virgin margaritas, daiquiris and pina coladas. Just blend your favourite cocktail ingredients with ice, and voila – instant refreshment.

Cutting out the alochol from your cocktails not only to helps you stay hydrated, it also means you’re less likely to fall asleep in the sun and wake up looking like a lobster.

3. Make a Splash

When it comes to cooling down, nothing beats a good old-fashioned dip.

Whether you’re lucky enough to live near the coast, or you’re making do with the local lido, swimming is a fantastic way to beat the heat.

The UK is home to some stunning beaches and outdoor pools, so take advantage of the warm weather and dive in.

If you don’t have easy access to a beach or pool, fear not!

A garden hose or paddling pool can be just as effective. Channel your inner child and have a water fight with friends or family.

Not only will you stay cool, but you’ll also create some priceless summer memories.

Just remember to check the hose temperature first – nobody wants to be sprayed with scalding water.

4. Keep Your Home a Cool Sanctuary

Turning your home into a cool sanctuary is crucial during a heatwave.

Start by keeping blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day to block out the sun.

It might make your home feel a bit like a cave, but at least it’ll be a cool cave.

Investing in some blackout curtains can make a world of difference, especially in rooms that get a lot of sunlight.

And if you’re feeling particularly inventive, create a DIY cool room by hanging a damp sheet in front of an open window.

The breeze will pass through the sheet, creating a makeshift air conditioner.

Another tip is to switch out your bedding for lighter fabrics.

Cotton and linen are your best friends during the summer months.

Swap heavy duvets for light sheets and ditch the hot water bottle for a frozen one.

Yes, you heard that right – fill a hot water bottle with cold water and pop it in the freezer.

It’s perfect for keeping your feet cool at night.

5. Stay Hydrated and Dress Smart

Last but certainly not least, let’s talk hydration and attire.

Staying hydrated is key to surviving the heat.

Keep a bottle of water with you at all times and sip regularly, even if you’re not feeling thirsty.

If plain water doesn’t float your boat, jazz it up with some slices of cucumber, lemon, or a handful of mint leaves.

Dressing smartly is also essential.

Light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen will help your body stay cool.

Avoid dark colours and synthetic materials, which can trap heat and make you feel like you’re in a sauna.

And don’t forget the sunhat and sunglasses – not only will you look effortlessly cool, but you’ll also protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.

For an extra cooling boost, keep a spray bottle filled with water in the fridge.

A quick spritz to the face, neck, and wrists can work wonders on a hot day.

If you’re out and about, a portable handheld fan or a cooling towel can be lifesavers.

Bonus Tip: Embrace the Siesta

This one’s for those who can manage it – the siesta.

When the heat is at its peak, take a leaf out of the Mediterranean book and enjoy a mid-afternoon nap.

It’s a great way to avoid the hottest part of the day and recharge your batteries.

Just be sure to set an alarm, or you might find yourself waking up in the middle of the night wondering what day it is.

So there you have it – five (and a half) fabulous ways to stay cool during the UK summer heat.

With a bit of creativity and a sense of humour, you can keep the heat at bay and enjoy everything that summer has to offer.
