Family Inspiration For Business Success – Kare Plus Franchise Case Study
“Healthcare will always have people at its core. AI doesn’t work here – people who need care will always need people to care for them.”
Kare Plus Rugby is the next to feature in a series of franchise case studies from across the Kare Plus network.
Taimur Sadat had no previous healthcare experience when he opened Kare Plus Rugby in June last year but the former civil servant, alongside his co-director and wife Mimosha Alam, were already billing care home hours within six months of opening and have continued to grow at pace into 2024.
With their CQC registration submitted and just awaiting final confirmation to introduce home care services, Taimur and Mimosha’s business is very much on the up.
So why did a tax specialist working for the DWP and HMRC choose to leave that career behind and invest in a Kare Plus franchise?
The answer is simple: Family.
Mimosha worked in the NHS for several years as an admin manager, co-ordinating a team of 25 people in a role not all that different from managing a team of agency nurses and healthcare assistants.
Her father also became ill and after two weeks in hospital, only option the NHS had for recuperative care was time away from his family in a care home.
“Despite his family being able to look after him at home, which we absolutely wanted to do with the support of a home care company where needed, it just wasn’t an option,” she said.
“They wouldn’t keep him in hospital but they wouldn’t let us bring him home either”.
Taimur said with Mimosha’s background and their recent experiences, he knew he wanted to launch his own business offering those services they hadn’t been given as a family.
“Recovery is in a much better place when you’re at home, with your own familyaround you to just give you a bit of extra help,” he added.
“Family can get a break with the home care and it was ultimately the home care side we were interested in when we looked to open our own business.
“It’s a growing market and most prefer to stay home rather than go into a care home. We wanted to make a difference, as we have such a passion for it.”
Mimosha added: “Care is personal and you need a person to care for you – you will always actually need people.”
Why Kare Plus?
“Choose a franchisor that offers a good level of support, with training and ongoing mentorship.”
Taimur and Mimosha decided on Kare Plus to become franchisees with over other options in the healthcare industry due to its unique dual model, which no other healthcare companies offer.
They have quickly become one of the quickest franchisee success stories for the brand and are already seeing a return on what they have invested.
“Kare Plus allows franchisees to supply both carers and nurses as an agency, as well as eventually being able to offer domiciliary care,” he said.
“Through my research, I found that no other franchisor in the UK healthcare industry offered this combination, making Kare Plus the obvious choice.
“We opened the Kare Plus Rugby office doors in June 2023 and started getting out and building the business from July.
“The team has since grown, with new employee Emma starting with us in December 2023 as our registered manager.”
Taimur said transitioning to Kare Plus as a franchisee was daunting initially but with continuous support from the Kare Plus team, he was able to quickly understand the business model and focus on business development and recruitment simultaneously.
“I didn’t have a healthcare background like Mimi did and it was really good to understand the whole offering of how it works and healthcare.
“There is really good training and that made us feel more confident.”
Taimur found the sharing of stories through other franchise case studies within the Kare Plus network was also really useful.
“Hearing how other established franchisees have done and how they did it very much motivated us to want the same success or do even better.”
Businesses launched as a franchise have a stronger chance of success than those that go it alone, thanks to the national support network.
Everything from marketing help to training, compliance and ongoing business development is included with Kare Plus on a mentorship basis.
Why Franchising Is A Good Path for Business Ownership
Taimur found that going down the franchise route for his new business offered less risk than doing it alone.
“I chose franchising as a path for business ownership because Kare Plus already had successful franchisees operating in different territories.
“This indicated to me that Kare Plus’s model was effective and reduced the risk associated with starting from scratch.”
Despite lacking experience in the healthcare industry himself, Taimur was eager to make a difference and has found franchising a way to gain insights into the industry quickly.
“While Mimi is the one with the NHS background, I do have extensive managerial experience and a deep understanding of business management,” he said.
“I have a bachelor’s degree, master’s and a doctorate, plus several years experience in the civil service, which I believe are valuable transferable skills to the healthcare industry.
“Team management, workload management and meeting key performance indicators are all skills I could bring to running our Kare Plus Rugby franchise.”
Taimur has big plans for his business, including significantly expanding his clients and customers with new services.
Once they have confirmation of final CQC sign off, Rugby will launch homecare services to expand the business further.
“Our ultimate goal is to become one of the top-performing franchises for Kare Plus, while also changing the perceived way of doing things in healthcare.
“We aim to deliver the best agency care staff in the area and, once our CQC rating is officially signed off, the best domiciliary services.”
Taimur’s Advice On Exploring A Franchise
The franchised business model is proving a success for Taimur and Mimosha, who are enjoying growth through their hard work, supported by Kare Plus.
But what advice would they give to others considering taking the leap into franchising?
“I would advise anyone exploring a franchise opportunity to conduct thorough research and understand the market demand before choosing a territory.
“It’s essential to assess what competitors are doing and determine how you can differentiate yourself with the backing of the main franchisor, in this case Kare Plus.
“Choose a franchisor with a commitment to a good level of support, with training and ongoing mentorship.”
They believe that at the end of the day, any new franchised business comes down to the demand for its services in their local area.
“And it has been hard at times,” admitted Mimosha.
“Any start up isn’t easy, it’s hard work but we are getting there. We are getting busier and starting to build more hours.”
