Challenging Behaviour and Learning Difficulties – Kare Plus Ashford Case Study

Sunday, June 30th, 2024 | Maria Wilkinson

In February 2023, Kare Plus Ashford introduced a new complex care service for learning disabilities and challenging behaviour.

While this type of complex care comes with additional challenges, it also comes with increased rewards.

The majority of Kare Plus Ashford’s home care business is now through private clients rather than local authority contracts.

In adding complex care services for those with learning disabilities, Kare Plus Ashford’s director Paul Tiltman has seen his business grow significantly in the past 12 months.

In Paul’s own words, here’s his Kare Plus Ashford case study explaining how he did it, only five years after first opening his franchise.

  • Upskilling our care team
  • Revamped recruitment process
  • Building relationships and networking
  • Becoming a training company
  • Increased Maybo training
  • Nurse led and complex training modules
  • Studying successful peers
  • Balance compliance and growth

How To Introduce Complex Care Services To Your Homecare Business

Learning disability care is not without its challenges but the rewards are worth it.

Introducing our complex care services for those with challenging behaviours and learning difficulties

Upskilling Our Care Team

Recognising the importance of preparing our existing care team for the complexities of the new services, we implemented comprehensive training programmes to enhance the skills and knowledge of our caregivers.

This ensured they were well equipped for the challenges of complex care.

Revamped Recruitment Processes

Our recruitment strategies were altered to attract candidates specifically inclined towards complex care.

This included emphasising the importance of experience and qualifications relevant to the expanded services during the hiring process.

Building Relationships and Networking

Proactively engaging with local authority care managers is essential to build strong relationships.

Initiating a robust networking strategy to establish connections within the healthcare community helped foster collaboration and enhanced our understanding of evolving care needs.

You need to build that network to then build your relationships with the right people.

Becoming A Training Company

In response to the evolving needs of our complex care services, Kare Plus Ashford has strategically positioned itself as a training ‘hub’.

We have developed an internal training infrastructure, effectively becoming a training company ourselves.

This allows us to efficiently and continuously upskill our staff, ensuring they remain at the forefront of industry best practices.

Our staff also really appreciate the convenience of their training all in one place.

Increased Maybo Training

Acknowledging the need for specialised training in managing challenging behaviours, we significantly increased our commitment to Maybo training.

This reduces the potential risk to our team when faced with conflict or challenging behaviours, with the emphasis on prevention, de-escalation and alternatives to physical intervention.

Both existing and new caregivers undergo the training to allow them to handle a complex care scenario effectively.

Nurse Lead and Complex Training Modules

Recognising the importance of clinical expertise for this level of complex care, we are currently introducing a nurse lead into the business at Kare Plus Ashford.

This role will play a crucial role in delivering advanced and specialised training modules, further elevating the capabilities of our care team in handling complex care situations.

Studying Successful Peers

To further enhance our understanding of best practices and industry benchmarks, we actively study and analyse successful peers and other companies carrying out similar complex care.

This ongoing study informs our strategies, enabling us to adopt proven methods and stay ahead of emerging trends in the dynamic landscape or complex care services.

Our Advice For Other Business Owners – Balance Compliance and Growth

Our journey into complex care for those with learning disabilities has underscored the critical importance of maintaining stringent compliance standards while driving marketing and recruitment strategies.

Prioritise regulatory compliance to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both clients and staff.

Simultaneously, incorporate compliance measures seamlessly into your marketing and recruitment strategies to foster sustained, ongoing growth.

Ongoing Growth For Kare Plus Ashford Across Kent

To see how far Kare Plus Ashford has come since first opening in 2018, here’s a video Paul filmed for us three years ago on why he chose us as a healthcare franchise.

Part of a series in which we get to know the people behind the business, Paul was already an experienced franchise owner with a previous cleaning business before joining Kare Plus.

Paul’s previous franchise ownership experience helped him see great results with Kare Plus Ashford, later expanded to include Margate, in terms of both personal and profitable rewards.

Thanks to Paul for catching up with us for this Kare Plus Ashford case study, helping to showcase the best of our network across the UK.
