There aren’t many job roles that are as dynamic as the role of a healthcare assistant; a job that changes on a day-to-day basis. The basic tasks of the role may stay the same, but the support that is given from patient to patient will be unique. It is like no other job; it is challenging, rewarding and requires a strong sense of care. This why we are often asked “How do I become a HCA?”

So, if you’re interested in starting a career as a HCA, please read our list of five ways you can become a healthcare assistant.

1) Volunteer at your local care home

If you have no experience in the care industry, the best place to start is volunteering at local care homes around your area. This will show passion and ingenuity on your behalf, whilst also giving you some experience of the care environment. That experience will be invaluable when searching for a job as a HCA, and might just give you the edge you’ll need.

2) Start an apprenticeship

For those younger people wishing to become a healthcare assistant, an apprenticeship is definitely an excellent path. It gives people the chance to work in the career they want to, whilst also training and working towards a qualification. Most apprenticeships also end with the person being offered a role in the establishment that their apprenticeship took place.

3) Work in home care

Many home care positions require no previous experience as training is provided, and it’s a work environment that is similar in many ways to that of a healthcare assistant. Working in home care would prepare you for a hospital or establishment healthcare setting, whilst giving you the experience that makes you more attractive to potential HCA employers.

4) Research

Research is key, it will help build your knowledge of the role and make you more confident in any interviews you may have. There is loads of resources available online but one of the most popular websites is the Royal College of Nursing; they offer a comprehensive guide to the training needed and what to expect in the role. You can find that guide here.

5) Home and online courses

Qualifications are an important part of healthcare, they show an understanding of up to date techniques and willingness to learn. There are countless online courses available for people to study in their spare time. Applying for a HCA role with relevant qualifications is going to improve your chances.

Healthcare assistants are a vital part of the healthcare industry, so it’s no surprise that so many people want to start their career in the field. If there are any tips for hopeful HCAs that we’ve missed, please let us know in the comments.
