Virgin is currently working with families and campaigners to create autism-friendly holiday packages in locations all around the globe. The scheme will be rolled out in the future to a few hotels, before it is slowly expanded.

One of the biggest issues for families going on holiday with autistic relatives is that unfamiliar scenarios are often a great cause of distress, but Virgin’s new scheme will allow families access to detailed information before they book, alongside specially trained staff when they arrive at the resort, making the holidays a far less stressful ordeal.

It’s not the first time Virgin has helped make holiday experiences easier for autism sufferers, the organisation already welcomes families to use its dummy plane facilities, giving those with autism a chance to familiarise themselves with the surroundings of a plane.

There are around 700,000 people with some form of autism in the United Kingdom, equating to  just over 1 in every 100 people, many of which face difficulty on family holidays and new surroundings every day.

Virgin is not the first brand to show support for those diagnosed with autism though. Tesco recently trialed a quiet hour in some of its stores; turning off shop displays,, reducing noise and modifying the payment process - all creating a calming environment for autism sufferers to shop.

Across the UK, many people know what autism is but do not fully understand it, something that has led to many myths. With increasing publicity and support from national and international brands though, we can expect to see an increased understanding of autism in the coming months and years.
