What the National Living Wage Means For Care Workers

Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a lot to smile about for care workers within the industry lately. However, with the government’s announcement of a National Living Wage of £7.20 for over 25’s, rising to £9 per hour in five years, carers can look forward to a better standard of living and more returns for their hard work, starting from April of next year.

Care workers have always been paid a very low wage for what is undoubtedly a crucial role in society. Care work is very demanding and challenging and has deserved recognition in the form of financial remuneration for some time.

According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation,approximately 300,000 people, (half of all care workers) will benefit from the NLW and they will get an average of £462 more per year. The average wage of care workers in Britain currently stands at £6.72 per hour.

A government spokesman said: ‘The National Living Wage will benefit hundreds of thousands of care workers who will see their pay increase.’
