Dementia Friends is an initiative set up by the Alzheimer’s Society to educate us and change the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about Dementia. There are currently around 850,000 people in the UK living with Dementia. It will mainly affect people over the age of 65 as the likelihood of developing dementia increases significantly with age.

The Dementia Friends initiative joins up with organisations like Kare Plus to support offer ways we can work towards becoming ‘Dementia Friendly’. Many of the Kare Plus branches support the initiative and have been holding information sessions to help educate their local areas.

Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend, and at Kare Plus, we encourage you to become a friend yourself. It’s easy! All you need is a desire to learn more about what it’s like to live with Dementia.

You can attend a face to face Dementia session or watch our online video. Become a Dementia friend and learn all about the ways in which you can help and support those with Dementia. It could be as simple as telling your friends about Dementia Friends or visiting someone you know living with Dementia.

Dementia Friends Information Sessions

Dementia Friends information sessions are run by volunteer Dementia Friends Champions who are trained by the Alzheimer’s Society. Each session lasts for about an hour, and you can learn more about how to help create Dementia Friendly communities.

You can find a session near you at Dementia Friends - Find a Session .

Watch The Dementia Friends Online Video

The Dementia Friends website has lots of informative videos to watch at your leisure where you can find out more about the people who are living with Dementia. After watching these videos, you can sign up to receive resource packs which contain more information and tips on how we can all support those living with Dementia and help them feel a part of the community.

After learning a little more about Dementia, the Dementia Friends encourages you to turn this understanding into ways you can help those livening with the illness. These include:

  • Getting in touch & staying in touch with someone you know who is living with Dementia.
  • Volunteer for an organisation that helps people with Dementia.
  • Campaign for change!
  • Wear your Dementia Friends badge and tell 5 friends about the initiative.
  • Carry out a personal action such as being more patient when out in the community.
