Stress Awareness Month: Get more sleep

Thursday, April 14th, 2016 | Raising Awareness

The link between stress and sleep is very strong. Unfortunately it is also very contradictory.

Sleep is essential for keeping stress at bay, whilst keeping stress at bay is vital for a good night’s sleep. A real Catch-22 situation.

The ‘simple’ solution is to take medication either helping you sleep or help relieve you of stress, but the side effects of these can be counter-productive. Instead, it is far better to focus on relaxation techniques to help you naturally unwind before you go to bed.

To start with, simply cutting out alcohol and caffeine in the evening will make a world of difference to how well you sleep. Following this up with a warm bath and swapping your smartphone for an easy-to-read book will also help put your mind at ease. If you find it is your job that is the main route of your stress, try to put work to the back of your mind for at least a few hours before you call it a night too.

These are just a few simple tips that can help you relax before you go to bed, but for more stress relieving hints this Stress Awareness Month, you can learn more in our series of blogs, here.
