For the first time ever, the performance of care homes across England can be compared easily online.

Healthcare comparison site My NHS has now added care homes its list of comparable healthcare organisations, helping families and relatives make educated decisions about where their loved ones should be cared for.

The website allows searches to be conducted via postcode, area or town and provides a list of all care homes, both public and private, within a predetermined radius. Each establishment is then rated on quality indicators, such as Care Quality Commission and food hygiene ratings, and workforce indicators such as staff turnover and whether or not a registered care manager is in post. You can also view and leave customer reviews and star ratings.

Kare Plus Clinical Lead, Kate Willis sees the changes as a big step forward in access and knowledge of care homes: “The addition of care home information and reviews to the NHS Choices website is a hugely positive move within sourcing care. The majority of families acting as advocates or lasting powers of attorney have a hugely daunting task finding an appropriate service.

“This website offers a user friendly platform complete with star based reviews for services. We hugely rely on internet searches and reviews for most day to day purchases, so to have one for the provision for care is a quick and easy to use free tool that is available to all.”

This all comes in the same week Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt announced plans to roll out Wi-Fi throughout NHS hospitals – another digital advancement in the healthcare sector.
