Five ways to become a HCA

There aren’t many job roles that are as dynamic as the role of a healthcare assistant; a job that changes on a day-to-day basis. The basic tasks of the role may stay the same, but the support that is given from patient to patient will be unique. It is like no other job; it is challenging, rewarding and requires a strong sense of care. This why we are often asked “How do I become a HCA?”

1) Volunteer at your local care home

If you have no experience in the care industry and are interested in HCA jobs, the best place to start is volunteering at local care homes around your area. This will show passion and ingenuity on your behalf, whilst also giving you some experience of the care environment. That experience will be invaluable when searching for a HCA career, and might just give you the edge you’ll need.

2) Start an apprenticeship

For those younger people wishing to become a healthcare assistant, an apprenticeship is definitely an excellent path. It gives people the chance to work in the career they want to, whilst also training and working towards a qualification. Most apprenticeships also end with the person being offered a role in the establishment that their apprenticeship took place.

3) Work in homecare

Many homecare positions require no previous experience as training is provided, and it’s a work environment that is similar in many ways to that of a healthcare assistant.
